On Friday, October 24, pumpkins will soar through the air as three student teams from Florida Polytechnic University compete to see who can “chunk” a pumpkin the farthest.
Incorporating the principles of physics and mechanical engineering, students have built grand catapults that will launch pumpkins across the recreational field on campus. The team whose catapult sends a pumpkin the farthest will win the inaugural Poly Pumpkin Trophy.
Also participating this year are several teams of middle school students from All Saints Academy in Winter Haven, Fla., who will compete in the middle school division of the contest.
Florida Poly hopes to attract teams from area colleges, high schools and middle schools to compete in next year’s Poly Pumpkin contest.
