One-Day Boot Camp Sessions

9:00 – 9:15

Introduction

Welcome to Florida Poly’s Math Boot Camp! Meet the students volunteering and introduce yourself.

Locations:  IST 1003, IST 1065, IST 1062

 

9:15 – 9:30 Tarsia Project
A quick warm-up activity on exponent rules.
9:30 – 10:00 Who traveled furthest?
Use the latitude and longitude of your high school to calculate exactly how far Florida Poly is from your high school.
10:00 – 12:00 Gallery Walk
A fast paced review of topics necessary to success as an engineer or computer scientist. You’ll have 5-10 minutes at each station where you’ll need to solve the problem in front of you in order to move on.
12:00 – 12:45 Lunch
A catered lunch where you can talk to other students and relax before the afternoon sessions.

1:00 – 1:30 Breakout Sessions Part 1
Choose between a 25 minute session in the following subjects:

  • Trigonometry (IST 1065)Do sine, cosine and tangent sound like foreign words? Maybe this session is for you!
  • Simplifying Polynomials/Rational Expressions (IST 1003)FOIL isn’t just used in cooking. Head to this session for a crash course in polynomials.
  • Graphing (IST 1062)Get a quick review of graphing all the important parent functions.

 

1:30 – 2:00 Breakout Sessions Part 2
Head to a second breakout session to get practice in another area.
2:00 – 3:00 Real problems with Real Students
Several of our student organizations will be present with problems related to their club. Get a chance to meet some of our current students while they introduce you do what Poly students do in their free time.

3:00 – 5:00 Florida Poly Primers (Optional)
Take the pre-test for the Florida Poly Primer: Calculus and ask any questions you have. Someone will be available to help explain how to use the Primer to your best advantage.
