App streaming has come to Florida Poly

This notice appeared in the Weekly Phoenix between August 27, 2019 and September 2, 2019.

App streaming allows you to access software you need for classes and research from any device, anywhere, any time. Visit the website to see for yourself. Most of the software that runs in our computer classrooms and labs are available for app streaming, including Maya, MATLAB, SOLIDWORKS, Visual Studio, and Mathematica. Apps run in our data center or servers designed for compute-intensive and 3D-intensive software. We require the use of Duo multi-factor authentication to access app streaming. You can stream apps in any modern browser, but we recommend you install the VMWare Horizon client for the best experience.

For those of you that helped pilot test app streaming over the summer: First, thank-you! Second, the way you access streaming apps has changed. We suggest reading on to learn about the differences.

If you would like to share with us how you are using app streaming, please contact the Helpdesk by email or call 863-874-8888.

Duo enrollment

We use Duo multi-factor authentication to protect accounts at Florida Poly. Multi-factor authentication uses something you know—your password and something you have, like your smartphone or another device—to verify that it’s really you.

  • In a browser, visit the website and log in with your Florida Poly username and password.
  • In the Duo prompt click Enroll, then follow the instructions. You’ll be asked to provide your phone number to install the Duo Mobile app on your smartphone, and then you’re guided through configuring the mobile app.

See Duo’s Enrollment Guide for more details and a visual walkthrough.

Horizon client install

You can access Florida Poly streaming apps in any modern browser. Even so, we find the Horizon client provides a better experience.

  • In a browser, visit the VMWare website.
  • Download and install the best client for your device. VMWare provides clients for Windows, macOS, x86 Linux, iOS, and Android.

You do not need to configure the Horizon client. Apps will load automatically when run from the app streaming website.

Running apps

Once you’ve installed the Horizon client, running apps couldn’t be simpler.

  • In a browser, visit the app streaming website. Log in if necessary.
  • In the catalog, find the app you want to run and click Open. If prompted allow your browser to open the Horizon client.

Questions

If you have questions about app streaming, please contact the Helpdesk by email or call 863-874-8888.
