Jan. 23 – Celebrate Ed Roberts Day!

This notice appeared in the Weekly Phoenix between January 17, 2023 and January 23, 2023.

Ed Roberts was a disability rights activist and is known as the father of the independent living movement. His birthday, Jan. 23, was declared Ed Roberts Day to honor his pioneering achievements that created and inspired more equitable, inclusive communities. Did you know he was an advocate for the sidewalk curb cuts we all see and use today that benefit not just the disability community, but everyone? This is just one of the ways he paved the way for modern independent living, and his many works of advocacy have led to greater accessibility for education, employment, and community living.

The Office of Disability Services will host a come-and-go event with cupcakes and informational resources at the Access Point, located at the back corner of the Phase II Residence Hall, on Monday, Jan. 23 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. All are welcome to stop by to celebrate Ed Roberts and learn about his legacy.
