April 27-Denim Day

This notice appeared in the Weekly Phoenix between April 19, 2022 and April 27, 2022.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and, as Florida Poly Phoenixes, we want to show our support in the fight to end sexual assault. Denim Day is an internationally recognized observance that encourages people to wear jeans to raise awareness of the misconceptions that surround sexual violence.

On Wednesday, April 27, wear something denim, take a photo, and post it with the hashtag #denimday to show your support against sexual assault.

Please meet at noon at the Wellness Center patio for a group picture.

Why denim? A ruling by the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped the person who raped her remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim.
