Rules to skateboarding on campus

This notice appeared in the Weekly Phoenix between October 29, 2019 and November 4, 2019.

The Florida Poly community loves to see students being active and skateboarding around campus between buildings and wants to commend the majority of students who comply with University regulations regarding the use of skateboards and similar devices on campus. In light of the recent skateboard incident that caused damage to the IST building, students need to be reminded about where skateboarding is allowed and where it is prohibited.

Riding skateboards and similar devices within 15 feet of a building on campus is prohibited for safety reasons and to prevent damage to University buildings. Riding skateboards and similar devices is also prohibited inside all buildings, the terrace of the IST building, the pond walkways, stairs, railings, and parking lots.

Riding skateboards and similar devices in prohibited areas may result in:

  • the rider or others being injured,
  • the rider being responsible for paying for any resulting damages (e.g., the windows of the IST building are custom made and can cost $30,000 each), and
  • the rider receiving disciplinary action through the Student Code of Conduct.

Riders should stop riding their skateboard or other device when approaching the pergolas and carry the skateboard into the IST building.
